Kyiv retaliates with the largest drone attack on Russian soil since the invasion of Ukraine

Escalating Aerial Conflicts

Russia experienced its most significant drone attack since initiating hostilities against Ukraine. Concurrently, Moscow executed an aerial bombardment on Kyiv, resulting in two casualties, intensifying the conflict’s aerial dynamics.

Drone Assaults Across Russia

Early Wednesday witnessed drone attacks in six Russian regions, including Moscow. Notably, in Pskov city, situated close to the Estonian boundary, multiple transport aircraft were allegedly harmed following a drone strike on an airport.

Russian Reactions to Aerial Strikes

Despite facing numerous attacks, Russian officials have not reported any casualties. They assert that the majority of the strikes were successfully thwarted.

Interceptions and Claims

Russian defense forces reportedly intercepted a Ukrainian missile over eastern Crimea and downed at least one drone over the Bryansk region in western Russia. Oleg Kryuchkov, an advisor to the Russia-appointed leader of Crimea, stated that the missile’s remnants ignited a field in eastern Crimea. However, further details about the missile remained undisclosed.

Kyiv’s Massive Bombardment

According to Kyiv officials, the Ukrainian capital suffered a significant overnight bombardment from Russia. Serhii Popko, the head of Kyiv’s Military Administration, expressed on Telegram that the intensity of the attack on Kyiv was unparalleled since the spring.

Popko elaborated that multiple drone groups approached Kyiv from various directions, followed by missile strikes targeting the city. He stated that the air defense forces neutralized over 20 “enemy targets.”

Tragically, the Kyiv City Military Administration reported the deaths of two men, aged 26 and 36, with three others suffering injuries due to falling debris.

Ukraine Counters Attacks
Across Ukraine, 28 cruise missiles were intercepted and 15 out of 16 drones launched overnight were destroyed, as confirmed by the Commander in Chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, Valerii Zaluzhnyi.

Civilian Accounts from Kyiv
Yelena Yemelyanova, a 69-year-old resident of Kyiv, described the aftermath of the attacks: “The trees were aflame. The smoke was thick… shrapnel pierced the robust cabinet on my balcony.” She further added, “The explosion’s impact threw me against the corridor wall. Household items tumbled from the kitchen shelves. My apartment’s front door was shattered.”

Victor Savchuk, another local, shared a harrowing tale of his 15-year-old grandson being injured by falling debris. He spoke of the constant uncertainty, “The sirens blare several times daily. We’re constantly on edge.”

Moscow Airports Halt Operations
In recent times, Ukraine has displayed increasing audacity in targeting vital Russian locations from the air. This aggressive stance comes despite Russia’s ongoing assaults on Ukrainian cities. Consequently, after a series of raids, flight operations at all four major Moscow airports were temporarily halted. However, operations have since resumed.

Reports from Border Regions
In related developments, Bryansk’s governor, Aleksandr Bogomaz, reported that Ukrainian drones targeted a TV tower in his region. Additionally, Russia’s southwestern Bryansk region came under fire, leading to casualties.

Pskov, a city in western Russia, was also subjected to drone assaults. Mikhail Vedernikov, the region’s governor, shared footage of smoke billowing from what seems to be a residential zone. Reports suggest damage to four Il-76 aircraft in Pskov due to these attacks.

Russian Official Statements
Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, linked the spike in drone strikes on Russia to the “terrorist activities of the Kyiv administration.” He further stated that President Vladimir Putin is well-informed about all events.

Ongoing Ground Conflict
On the ground, intense combat and limited territorial gains continue. The Ukrainian town of Kupiansk, located in northeastern Ukraine, has seen an increase in evacuations, especially children, as Russian forces intensify their assault. Interestingly, Ukrainian forces are slowly advancing in the southern front, indicating strategic efforts by both parties to divert enemy troops from primary objectives.

Update on Ukrainian Front
The Ukrainian military reports advancements on the southern front, notably near Novodanylivka and Verbove. Success in the Verbove region would let Ukraine reclaim more territory as they push further south, aiming to liberate the strategically significant city of Tokmak, currently under Russian control.
