In recent events, approximately 30 heavily armed Serbs raided the village of Banjska in northern Kosovo. The confrontation resulted in the death of a Kosovo policeman and three attackers.

Kosovo PM’s Stance on Serbia’s Military
Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, expressed to the Associated Press the need for NATO’s support. He highlighted the extended Kosovo-Serbia border and Serbia’s augmenting military strength. “They are heavily armed with military gear from both Russia and China,” Kurti remarked. He also criticized their intentions, stating, “They aim to rewind the past 30 years, but that is unattainable.”

Kosovo’s Independence and International Recognition
Kosovo proclaimed its independence in 2008, but both Belgrade and Moscow have not acknowledged it.

U.S. Reaction to Serbia’s Military Buildup
White House’s spokesperson for the National Security Council, John Kirby, identified a significant Serbian military positioning, including tanks and artillery, at the Kosovo border. Labeling this as a “destabilizing act,” he pressed Serbia to pull back. The White House also emphasized its commitment to ensuring NATO’s Kosovo Force (KFOR) had ample resources. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken contacted Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, urging for immediate tension relief and renewed dialogue.

Resignation of Serb List Vice President
Following the attack, Milan Radoicic, vice president of the primary Kosovo-Serb political entity, Serb List, stepped down after confessing to organizing the militant group behind the assault.

U.S. Ambassador’s Take on the Attack
The U.S. ambassador to Kosovo, Jeffrey M. Hovenier, expressed to POLITICO that the attack was a calculated move aiming to destabilize the region. He emphasized the organized and sophisticated nature of the assault, noting that the assailants seemed militarily trained. “The vast arsenal indicates a major intent to disrupt regional security,” Hovenier stated.

EU and U.S. Peace Efforts
The EU and the U.S. have consistently sought peace talks between Kosovo and Serbia. Yet, challenges, mainly regarding the status of northern Kosovo where the majority of Serbs live, have obstructed a definitive settlement.
